Did you miss it? You can watch this online discussion, and many others, on the club’s youtube channel HERE.
What is scouting and when do you do it? Also how do you scout?
Contributing their considerable river expertise to this discussion, the scouting discussion will feature a panel of Chattooga guides—people who have worked as paddle raft guides and safety boaters on one of the most beautiful and dangerous commercially rafted sections of river in the lower 48.
By the end of this talk you’ll have new ideas about ways to look at a river. Expect our panel to tell stories about times they made scouting errors. Indeed there are many mistakes you can make, and this group knows because they’ve made them. If you have ever scouted a rapid or river, and then been surprised once in it, you probably have a story to tell too.
The gang of guides that will be on hand to talk about scouting includes: Bill Hester (school teacher in China), Peter Benedict (Colorado Rocky Mountain School faculty), Jim “Schlimm” Wallace (still guiding), Hobbit Hawes (builder and guide), Ellie Bixler (grad student, anthropology), Robin Kinnaird (of Whetstone photography fame, now retired), Joy Neily (teacher), D Kareken (musician and artist) and Teresa Gryder (LCCC safety chair).
Says the group, “We think of ourselves as Chattooga guides years after leaving that river because of the way it has changed us.”
